
Host ~ BOB MCDONALD. Science journalist, accomplished author, and broadcaster, BOB MCDONALD has been dedicated to science and education for 25 years. Since 1992 he has been the host of QUIRKS & QUARKS on CBC Radio. Bob's long list of credits include a number of investigative reports for CBC's IDEAS and AS IT HAPPENS. He has written, produced, and hosted over 100 educational videos, and written for the GLOBE AND MAIL. Before joining QUIRKS & QUARKS, Bob hosted the children's science program, WONDERSTRUCK. In 2001 Bob McDonald was honoured with the Michael Smith Award for Science Promotion from NSERC and the 2002 SANDFORD FLEMING MEDAL from The Royal Canadian Institute for his contributions to the public awareness of science. Producer/Project Leader ~ PROFESSOR JAMES M. BYRNE, B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D. A professor at the University of Lethbridge, Jim's career highlights include: National Theme Leader in Water Resources Management, Canadian Water Network, co-producer and project leader for the GLOBAL CHANGE: ACCESS TV series; Project Leader of the Nat Christie Climate and Agriculture Research Program, 1992-96. Jim is currently supervising a series of studies investigating the impacts of climate change on water resources in western North America. He also serves as project leader and principal investigator, microbial ecology program, Oldman River Basin, Alberta. Jim has supervised/co-supervised 18 graduate students at the Masters level since 1995, and one Post Doctoral Fellow (1992-96).
Producer/Director ~ GEORGE GALLANT, GALLANT PRODUCTIONS INC. George Gallant has worked in most every aspect of the television production industry from photography and editing to series producer and production co-ordinator at CISA Television. While at CISA he garnered 9 national awards for programming he produced and directed. He has been an independent producer for the past 6 years and has worked on various projects including broadcasting daily live video back to Canada from Nepal for CBC during the successful Everest 2000 Expedition. He has also traveled from the top of the world in Alaska to the bottom, in Argentina, documenting the world record setting trek of cyclist Andries Botha. His work with Access Television has earned him 2 AMPIA Awards for Best Educational programming in 2002 for Global Change and 2003 for Dancing Bodies.
Co-Producer ~ RICHARD MRAZEK, PH.D. is assistant Dean of Graduate Studies and Research and a Professor of Science Education at the University of Lethbridge. Dr. Mrazek has been noted as being one of the leading authorities on a Canadian context for science education and science - technology - society - environment relationships. He chaired the North American Commission for Environmental Education Research, and served as a member of the UNESCO MAB/NET group of the Canadian Man and Biosphere Committee (Canada/MAB). This international award-winning science educator's water related research projects span the last two decades.
Expert ~ DR. DAVID SCHINDLER ~Professor/Killam Professor. David Schindler is Killam Memorial Professor of Ecology at the University of Alberta, Edmonton. From 1968 to 1989, he founded and directed the Experimental Lakes Project of the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans near Kenora, Ontario, conducting interdisciplinary research on the effects of eutrophication, acid rain, radioactive elements and climate change on boreal ecosystems. His work has been widely used in formulating ecologically sound management policy in Canada, the USA and in Europe. His current research interests include the study of fisheries management in mountain lakes, the biomagnification of organochlorines in food chains, effects of climate change and UV radiation on lakes, and global carbon and nitrogen budgets.
EMMY award winning RANDY TOMIUK is Director of Photography. A 29 year veteran of the broadcast industry, Randy's experience includes documentary, educational, travel, sports, corporate, live performance, drama, wildlife and underwater videos. He received his Emmy in 1990 for his shooting on the IRON MAN TRIATHLON in Hawaii with ABC WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS. Randy has production credits with the NATIONAL FILM BOARD, DISCOVERY CHANNEL, GLENBOW MUSEUM, ACCESS TV, MUSEUM OF CIVILIZATION, ESPN, DND, DINOSAUR SOUP, PARKS CANADA, CTV SPORTS and ABC SPORTS.
Writer ~ Sherri Gallant. Thomson Newspapers gave her top national honours in 1990 for her coverage of a series of cult-related teenage suicides. Those stories garnered attention from the world press, and she had her stories published in London and New York. In the fall of 2001 she gained a national audience writing a series of stories from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland about the work of a Canadian mediator teaching conflict resolution skills. Her investigative reporting exposed an American in Lethbridge posing as a 911 firefighter and again earned her national recognition, and a nomination for Best Local Reporting from the National Newspaper Association. .
Script Editor ~ Laura Hutchinson-Maclean. Laura has been writing for television for the past 15 years and has worked with Gallant Productions on the the award winning series Global Change.
Animator ~ JASON KNOTT, FRAMEWORK ANIMATION LTD. A specialist in 3D computer graphics and animation since 1992; Jason's portfolio includes graphics for television, corporate video, architecture, and engineering. Broadcast credits include GESTURES and GLOBAL CHANGE - ACCESS Television, FOOD FOR THOUGHT TV - Growing Alberta, Various show introductions and station IDs - CJIL-TV.
Sound Mix ~ Pat Butler and the crew at the award winning Twisted Pair Sound in Calgary, Ab, are handling audio post-production duties on Water Under Fire.
Production Associate: Nicole Rabe, B.A., M.Sc. A National Science and Engineering Research Council Scholar and a Certified Remote Sensing Scientist, designated by the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute and Canadian Remote Sensing Society. Nicole is a research associate with Dr. James Byrne at the University of Lethbridge, working on the integration and application of geomatics in climate change and watershed research. These include Climate Scenarios: Variability and Extremes (Climate Change Action Fund), South Saskatchewan River Basin Study, and of course, “Water Under Fire”.
